Get the 5 Best Horror Films of the 70s Onto DVD

The 1970s was a golden era for horror films. Some of the all-time classics were created during this decade, and there are far too many to mention in one article.

If you are an avid horror fan then you may well have collected a number of horror films in VHS format over the years, only to wish now that you had them on DVD. Luckily, video to DVD conversion is available so if you have any of the following classics in your collection then you might want to consider getting them converted into a better quality, longer lasting format so you can continue watching them for many years to come.

1. The Exorcist

Made in 1973, The Exorcist by William Friedkin is one of the classic horror films of all time. Stories of people fainting in the cinemas and a ban in numerous countries did wonders to hype up the film, and although the effects may be dated now it still packs a punch. Some say this is the greatest horror film ever made, so definitely consider video to DVD conversion with this one.

2. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

When The Texas Chainsaw Massacre came out in 1974 it was almost too realistic to watch. Made on a budget, it is a masterful feat of film making, relying on the combination of realism, constant thrills and plenty of gore to grip audiences right the way through. Director Tobe Hooper did a fantastic job and created one of the most terrifying films ever made.

3. Jaws

Jaws was the original summer blockbuster which made a whole generation too scared to go into the water when it hit the screens in 1975. Despite effects which are now laughable, it is still scary and Spielberg's use of suspense is fantastic. The excellent score just adds to the power of the film and it is one horror film that should feature in everyone's collection.

4. The Omen

The Omen appeared on our screens in 1976 and introduced us to Damien, the embodiment of evil menacingly portrayed by the young Harvey Stephens. Films with children as the bad guys are always unsettling, but this is a truly terrifying film that managed to shock audiences around the world.

5. Halloween

Directed by John Carpenter, Halloween came out in 1978 and marked the moment when the slasher genre went mainstream. The low-budget film was highly successful and spawned a whole slew of imitators, and Jamie Lee Curtis's portrayal of Laurie Strode being hunted by Michael Myers made her into a star.

Backup Your Horror Collection

There are many other films left off this list such as Carrie and the classic British horror film The Wicker Man, but this just goes to show what an impressive decade this was for horror films. If you have a number of horror films stored away on VHS gathering dust, give them a new lease of life by taking advantage of video to DVD conversion. You'll be able to back up all your favourite films and enjoy watching them all in better quality.

AFTER DARK FILMS announce "Fertile Ground"

After Dark Films CEO Courtney Solomon continues the momentum of After Dark Originals �A New Brand of Fear� with his announcement of the bonechilling 5th film, Fertile Ground. Writer/Director Adam Gierasch (Autopsy, Night of the Demons) co-wrote this film together with Jace Anderson. The film stars Leisha Hailey (The L Word) and Gale Harold (Queer as Folk, Desperate Housewives).

Emily and Nate Weaver leave the city for the rural comfort of Nate�s ancestral home in the country. Once there, Emily is plagued by horrifying visions and haunted by the ghosts inhabiting their isolated new home. When Nate�s behavior undergoes a strange and fearful metamorphous, Emily fears she might be the latest target in a murderous tradition. Producer Solomon states, �Leisha Hailey is completely convincing as a woman in peril. As the plot thickens, twists and surprises unfold that keep the viewer engaged and in constant suspense.�

Fertile Ground was shot in Iowa, the home state of Executive Producer Stephanie Caleb. Release date for Fertile Ground and all eight Originals is scheduled for January 2011. The series was developed in partnership with Lionsgate.

"Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" set for release Jan

Miramax Films have set January 21, 2011 as the release date for their new horror movie, "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark." Produced by Guillermo del Toro and Mark Johnson, directed by Troy Nixey, the film is about a young girl who accidentally awakens malevolent creatures in her father's house. Sent to live with her father and his girlfriend while they are renovating their house, strange events begin to happen. She must convince the grown ups that these creatures are real and that they are in danger before all is lost.

Starring Katie Holmes, Guy Pearce, Bailee Madison and Jack Thompson, this movie promises to deliver a few surprises and should start the year off right.

Fear Clinic - Episode 1 review

Honest, well acted horror from the masters themselves. Finally we are given a horror show that actually focuses on the storyline more than just throw blood around the set and mix in some CGI effects.

Robert Englund, Kane Hodder and Danielle Harrison have come together and created horror gold. Taking advantage of the internet as a delivery medium the series "Fear Clinic" explores phobias as Dr Andover (Robert Englund) utilizes his unorthodox methods to cure his patients... one way or the other.

If you're tired of watching bad remakes of Japanese horror movies, rehashed, retold versions of movies that have already been done or so called horror that isn't worth watching, then Fear Clinic is for you.

If you suffer from Hydrophobia (the fear of water), then you will really be squirming in your chair. If you are not afraid of the subject, you may be after watching the episode.



The most amazing aspect of this show is that you can tell the cast is enjoying themselves as the show progresses. This is not a script that some actors were handed and they are earning their paycheck. This show is the result of three horror experts being involved in a project they themselves believe in. Well written scripts, incredible directing and insane camera angles all come together to bring us the new "must see" horror show.
